Not looking good

Our friend Eugene takes beautiful bird photos daily. Normally they are alive.

This is what he wrote today:

I just found this dead red crossbill by one of my feeders, and shot 
the photo so you could get an idea of how small they really are. I 
don’t have especially large hands.
I’ve seen a lot of sick pine siskens and red crossbills over the past 
few months. I don’t know what’s going on, but believe it to be serious.

It worries me quite a bit, particularly after the shocking numbers I just read last week:

Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar has released the first ever comprehensive report on bird populations in the United States, showing that nearly a third of the nation’s 800 bird species are endangered, threatened or in significant decline due to habitat loss, invasive species, and other threats.

The story I read said Montana’s bird populations were ok, but I can’t find that any consolation since it’s not as if we’re not connected to the rest of the planet! Maybe we are just delayed.
